The Story Behind the Name

Named after the endangered silverspot butterfly native to our coast, our shop is rooted in respect for the local ecosystem and the place we call home.

Silverspot Ceramics is named in honor of the Behren’s silverspot butterfly, a rare species native to the coastal grasslands and dunes of Northern California. Once found along much of the Sonoma and Mendocino coastline, this delicate butterfly now survives in only a few highly localized areas, dependent on healthy coastal habitats and the early blue violet plant. Its presence is a reminder of the fragile beauty of this place and of the care, attention, and stewardship needed to help both art and nature continue to thrive.
